PWTAG is a direct source of advice and help for pool managers and operators, local authorities, industry, etc. PWTAG is also active behind the scenes, working with governmental and other agencies. Each year hundreds of formal and informal contacts are made. Some of this work consists of allaying fears raised by press accounts of academic work. PWTAG is able to call on professional and technical expertise within (and if necessary beyond) its membership. Much of this work is confidential, but some subjects covered since the last annual report can be highlighted:

Cryptosporidium epidemiology and filtration
• liquid pool covers
• interactive water features, including outbreaks
• rapid microbiological test kits
• vomit in pools
• glass filter media
• anti-bacterial chewing gum
• stress corrosion cracking
• paddling pool safety
• recommended pH values
• pre-swim hygiene
• ultraviolet irradiation
• coagulation guidelines
• high-rate filtration performance
• copper/silver water treatment
• spa pools
• asthma
• infection risk with bromine treatment of spa pools
• filter sand cleaner
• trichloramines in the air of pools.

Information about these issues is available from PWTAG's technical secretary.
