Income comes traditionally from membership subscriptions. Sport England was PWTAG's major sponsor – £12,000pa up to 2003/04, £6,000 after that. Unfortunately, in 2006 Sport England withdrew all funding because of a financial and institutional crisis in that organisation. Attempts are being made to remedy this through lobbying.

Other member organisations subscribe at an annual rate, currently, of £1,895. Since the publication of Swimming Pool Water treatment and quality standards in 1999, publications have sometimes matched subscriptions as an income source. Even in 2005/06 it provided a net income of about £12,000 – a third of PWTAG’s total income.

PWTAG's projected income for 2006/07 is £35,375. Of this £15,000 is projected from further sales of Swimming Pool Water, including the anticipated extra income from publication of a new, revised edition during 2006/07.

Expenditure is chiefly on administrative expenses and research. The former is more or less paid for by the subscription income. Research expenditure in the two years 2004/05/06 was £14,100 out of a total expenditure of £69,720. Total expenditure for 2006/07 is projected to be £76,285. Of that, £20,000 is ear-marked for research and £25,000 for the editorial, design and print costs of the new edition of Swimming Pool Water. (PWTAG members give freely of their time in this and other work.)

PWTAG is committing to these two significant areas of expenditure, despite fthe financial impact of Sport England’s withdrawal of funding, because of their importance. Nevertheless, it does mean that PWTAG is faced with the real possibility of a financial crisis in 2007/08.
