SWIMMING POOL WATER
Treatment and Quality Standards

ISBN 0 951 7007 66

In 1995 the independent, industry-wide Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group published Pool Water Guide. Its comprehensive guidelines, and authoritative yet approachable style, quickly established it as the must-have guide for everyone involved in pools. In three years it sold 4,000 copies.

Swimming Pool Water

The swimming pool world moves on, and in 1999 PWTAG published SWIMMING POOL WATER - Treatment and Quality Standards
(ISBN 0 951 7007 6 6)
.

The new book, with sales already in excess of 7,000 copies in five years, is twice the size (144 pages), so it's much more than an update - though all PWTAG's advice and judgements have been re-examined and refined where necessary. The research sponsored by PWTAG at Cranfield University has helped inform those judgements.

Important changes with the new publication include:
  • A new chapter on the practical basis for swimming pool water treatment includes the relevance of the varying nature of source waters

  • A good, typical 25m pool is identified and its disinfection, circulation, filtration etc traced through the book in the relevant chapters - with diagrams. A new chapter on choosing a disinfectant includes safety, efficacy and cost

  • A new, detailed chapter on dosing includes details on equipment, operation, automatic control, sampling, dosing strengths and circulation feeders for dry chemicals

  • The water circulation chapter has much new material, including details on design, balance tanks, inlets and outlets and dye testing

  • A new chapter on pool water chemicals includes new, detailed tables on the important characteristics of all chemicals approved (on safety grounds) by the DETR Committee

  • Two new chapters deal with delivery and storage of pool water chemicals

  • A new chapter on plant maintenance has many examples of inspection and maintenance regimes

  • Two new chapters deal with cleaning, protection and first aid

Other Publication News

A new and expanded edition is planned for Autumn 2008. Although the principles and practices in Swimming Pool Water will not change significantly, the new edition will have any necessary revisions, as well as comprehensive guidelines on non-conventional pools - spas; hotel, hydrotherapy and domestic pools, etc. There will also be a new chapter on environment and conservation issues in pool design and operation.

The books published by PWTAG in the past - Ozone Water Treatment for Swimming Pools: a National Survey (1986) and the 1990 book Pool Monitor - are now officially out of print, inquiries to PWTAG Secretary.
