Highlights of the year...
Research
Following on the results of lab trials on the importance of coagulation to Cryptosporidium filtration, two further programmes of research have been launched. The results of analysis of pool hall atmospheres give no cause for complacency about trichloramines. Analysis of lab trials on grout loss suggest that water hardness is much less important than application methods.
Health issues
Question marks about asthma and pools have been to the fore again. PWTAG has been involved in discussions and lobbying on this, through contacts with the press and broadcast media and behind the scenes with academics and government agencies
Standards
The BSI Code of Practice, sponsored by PWTAG, is in operation. The WHO pool guidelines that PWTAG helped draft have been published, as has an important book on spa pool management.
PWTAG’s book
Swimming Pool Water treatment and quality standards, the wellspring both of PWTAG's finances and its influence, is being updated and its scope extended for a new edition, to be published early in 2008.
Publicity
Through its website and elsewhere, PWTAG has issued guidance on pool atmospheres, interactive water features, novel treatments, and copper/silver.
Finances
PWTAG remains committed to a programme of research and publication despite the threat to its finances caused by the withdrawal of Sport England’s financial support. This betrayal is being resisted.
