PWTAG | Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group

Welcome to PWTAG – The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group

PWTAG is a UK-based independent, non-commercial membership organisation, dedicated to raising standards in pool water treatment. Our work over the last 40 years has made us the authoritative source of standards and guidance in the management of swimming, spa and hydrotherapy pools.

Our book Swimming Pool Water: treatment and quality standards for pools and spas is the definitive guide while our Code of Practice is a vital industry text.

We collaborate with government agencies and professional and technical specialist bodies. Currently 20 of these form our core membership. Their representatives are crucial in setting and maintaining standards for the management of safe pool water.

Celebrating 40 years of PWTAG

To mark the anniversary of its establishment in 1985, PWTAG asked its longstanding editor to write a history of the group. From its 1929 roots in the Ministry of Health and 50 years later the Department of the Environment, the history tracks the increasing influence of PWTAG.

From chairs like Phil Penny, Andy Elphick, Ralph Riley and Janice Calvert; publications like Pool Monitor, Pool Water Guide, Swimming Pool Water and Hot Tubs for Business; initiatives like research, Code of Practice, technical notes, training and conferences – PWTAG’s success over 40 years is both unique and hard-fought.
