North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from York, Acomb and Huntington, along with specialist incident support from Malton were called to Heslington at around 10.15pm last night (September 1).
The University of York confirmed the leak at the York Sport Village just off Hull Road, close to the Grimston Bar Park and Ride and its Heslington East Campus.
A spokesperson for the University of York said: “The swimming pool at York Sport Village has been temporarily closed after a chlorine alarm was triggered in the plant room.
“A damaged pipe was quickly identified and isolated and the spilt chlorine was quickly contained.
“There were no customers in the building at the time and no-one was injured as a result of the incident.
“Engineers are currently on site to repair the affected pipe and we aim to open the pool as soon as possible.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank everyone for their patience.”
A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus equipment neutralised the chemical with on-site specialists who were also in attendance.
“Advice was given to the responsible persons and the chemical was expertly cleaned.
“Gas detectors were also used by crews at this incident.”
