Historic Pools of Britain – July News

Join us in Newcastle

On Tuesday 30 September we’ll be hosting our next HPB event at The City Baths, Newcastle.  This will place particpants at the centre of the restoration story that began in 2012 when it was announced that the Baths would be closed.  We’ll hear about the community-led response, the campaign that followed, the breakthrough moments and the work that was undertaken to restore the building as it is today.  And part of this exploration will include the chance to enjoy a Turkish Bath and swim session.

Also joining us to share a campaign update will be the Friends of Carlisle Victorian & Turkish Baths, who have been working hard to secure the future of the baths and ensure that the community doesn’t lose this precious resource.

The day will include lunch and refreshments.

To book your place please visit our new Events page, select the Newcastle event and then add your tickets to the basket and checkout.

Please ensure you select the correct ticket types for your membership.  Current Pool members receive 2 free places (+ £20 charge to cover lunch & refreshments) and extra member places are available to book at £45 each (including lunch & refreshments).  Individual members receive 1 free place (+ £20 charge to cover lunch & refreshments). We also welcome non-members to all our events, places are £60 each including lunch & refreshments.

Bookings are open until Tuesday 23 September.

Broomhill Pool Trust

The path to restoration is highly complex, prolonged and challenging.  For Broomhill Pool in Ipswich it’s a battle that began over 20 years ago and is continuing to throw up challenges.  As you may have read, the Trust is currently going through a funding set back, one which it has described as ‘its biggest yet’.   All associated parties are seeking to resolve the situation within a financial climate that has been ever changing, particularly in recent years.

Please do follow the Trust’s regularly updated news pages here.

Free heritage tours at Withington Baths

Withington Baths has a couple of free heritage tours on the calendar: Saturday 16 August and Saturday 13 September.  This is a chance to discover the rich history of Manchester’s last operational Edwardian pool, and maybe have stop off at the café during your visit.

And finally…

Catching our attention this month is the fabulously named ‘The Plunge’ in San Diego.  Built in 1925, there is little remaining of the original structure of what was once the world’s largest saltwater pool, but a century later it remains at the heart of its community.  Read more here.
